After a long winter of cold temperatures and endlessly fun pow days, springtime has finally hit us here in Mammoth Lakes, California. Late spring means classic California sunshine, slushy snow conditions, and the ideal weather for wearing a Fresh Clean Tees hoodie while taking hot laps in the terrain parks.
As one of the country’s best terrain parks, Mammoth Mountain and its Unbound Terrain Park crew regularly put together some of the most killer setups out there. Their seven parks offer a little something for everyone at every skill level, with more than 120 features that include multiple halfpipes and at least 30 jumps.
Hoodie season is one of our favorite times of the year and snowboarding is always more fun with your friends, so we generally try to meet up in the Chair 4 parking lot every day. The change in weather means we often show up in the same pullover hoodie, which always leads to a good laugh. Kicking off mornings at South Park is always fun because it has early sunshine that allows the snow to soften up just enough by 10 a.m. and that’s usually when we mosey on up there. The setup there is especially fun right now with a unique course that includes side hits, rails, jumps, and transition snow features. Offering the best of everything without the massive size that Main Park has, South Park is such a fun way to start the day, especially because going medium means low risk with a high reward of smiles and good times. After a few hours of laps through the transition park and warming up on the jumps, we head on over to Chair 6, so we can cruise through Forest Trail and Main Park.
Chair 6 is one of our favorite chairs to lap because it’s such a fast ride, so it feels like you’re riding a rope tow. We easily sneak in 30 hot laps in two hours. Forest Trail is perfect for learning new tricks because the jumps and rails are much smaller and the laps are twice as fast. Main Park is for the big dogs and we just haven’t been feeling it lately. Spring park laps, done up in our pullover hoodies, are more about having fun and less about going big. We’ve definitely achieved that this spring.
